Custom Cake Spotlight: Lemon Tree Wedding Cake and Vegan Octopus Groom’s Cake

Chelsea and Sean got married this past summer on June 27th in one of Chicago’s most gorgeous and unique spaces, the Harold Washington Library. The two book lovers thought it only fitting to get married among one of the city’s finest collections of literature. With the inclusion of lovely little details such as glimmering bistro lights and white umbrellas, their reception looked and felt like a Parisian market. Vibrant sunflowers, Chelsea’s favorite flower, were scattered throughout the decor. The beautiful floral and decor were provided by HMR Designs, and the fabulous planning was done by Lori Stephenson of LOLA Event Productions. Take a look at Chelsea and Sean’s lovely wedding photos by Jeremy Lawson Photography below:

The team here at Elysia Root Cakes had the pleasure of creating not one, but two cakes for Chelsea and Sean’s big day: a very unique wedding cake shaped as a lemon tree on a stack of books, and a vegan octopus groom’s cake. The wedding cake went along perfectly with the decor of the reception, which included lemon tree centerpieces at each table. Not as self-explanatory, the groom’s cake was shaped as an octopus to pay special homage to one of the groom’s tattoos. To go along with the entire vegetarian dinner (by Jewell Events Catering), the octopus groom’s cake was made vegan.

They had some pretty spectacular flavors in their wedding cake. Half was alternating chocolate and banana cake with salted caramel buttercream, and the other half was almond cake with raspberry conserve, cream cheese, and lemon curd fillings. The groom’s cake was chocolate cake with cream cheese and raspberry buttercream (all vegan).

Other vendors that made Chelsea and Sean’s spectacular wedding day possible are Smiling Toad Productions, Sonia Roselli, and Arlen Music Productions.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Wrigley Field Groom’s Cake and Elegant Five Tier Wedding Cake

We feel honored when we are asked to not only create the perfect wedding cake, but also a unique groom’s cake for a couple’s big day- especially when the groom’s cake is a surprise! Kendall and Patrick got married on April 11th, 2015 at Bridgeport Art Center in the Skyline Loft, and we had the privilege of crafting not one, but two cakes for their wedding. Aside from their gorgeous, five tier wedding cake, we crafted a mini replica of one of America’s most iconic stadiums- Wrigley Field. It’s always fun when brides surprise their groom with a cake that reflects their hobbies or personal interests- in this case, a love for the Chicago Cubs and their home base! Take a peek at the photos below by Shane Welch Photography.

This sculpted Wrigley Field groom’s cake was just as scrumptious as it was handsome: chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream coupled with dark chocolate ganache. Yum!

Kendall and Patrick’s wedding cake had a variety of different flavors, each tier different from the other. Beginning with the first tier, the flavors were as follows: vanilla bean cake with nutella buttercream, chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream, carrot cake with cream cheese filling, vanilla bean cake with cookies-n-cream buttercream, and red velvet cake with cream cheese filling. As a finishing touch, Fab Flora provided lovely fresh flowers that were added onto the top and sides of their cake.

We hope they enjoyed their cakes as much as we enjoyed making them! Other vendors who made their day spectacular were Denouement WeddingsFotio, and Catered by Design. Congratulations again, Kendall and Patrick!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Elegant Monogrammed Wedding Cake and Broncos Groom’s Cake

We absolutely loved working with Elizabeth and Ross and bringing their dream wedding cake(s) to reality. From the get go, they were the sweetest couple to work with- so great that Elysia likes to call them “dream clients.” As if their warm and extremely kind demeanors weren’t enough, they also make a stunningly gorgeous couple! Elizabeth and Ross tied the knot on October 25, 2014 at The Langham Chicago in the Devonshire Ballroom. A Stem Above provided beautiful floral, and Elizabeth’s amazing gown was designed by Peter Langner. Take a look at some lovely photos of their big day by Robyn Rachel Photography.

Their five-tiered, white monogrammed wedding cake topped with fresh orchids went along perfectly with their elegant theme. Classic and delicious, it was vanilla bean and chocolate cake filled with vanilla bean buttercream, chocolate buttercream and raspberry conserve.

Ross, a huge Denver Broncos fan, was so excited to have a Groom’s Cake modeled after a vintage Broncos football helmet. It was a chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream.

We were thrilled to contribute to their very special day, and we wish a lifetime of happiness to Elizabeth and Ross!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Unique Groom’s Cake and Cherry Blossom Wedding Cake

Our team at Elysia Root Cakes gladly welcomes unique cake requests that will truly represent the essence of couples and individuals. That’s why we had such a great time contributing to Marissa and Hunter’s wedding this past January, working alongside wedding designer extraordinaire Derrick Taylor of Taylor & Co. Derrick’s vision was to have a stunning winter wonderland wedding, while also incorporating a light literary theme. We made two special cakes for this lovely occasion: a unique groom’s cake and a seven-tiered cherry blossom wedding cake. Photos below were taken by RED Weddings.

The groom was Hunter Sharpless, author of Song of the Fool: On the Road with Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers. It seemed only fitting to include some literary elements in the event. Not only was the wedding held at the Newberry Library, but we also made a custom groom’s cake that resembled a stack of well-known literary works, featuring the cover of Song of the Fool on top. This scholarly groom’s cake was red velvet with cream cheese filling.

This tremendous seven-tiered cherry blossom wedding cake had different flavors alternating between the tiers: almond cake with cream cheese filling, as well as chocolate cake with salted caramel and dark chocolate ganache. The icy white cake with muted pink cherry blossoms and roses went along perfectly with the winter wonderland theme.

What is a Groom’s Cake?

A friend and I were discussing her wedding plans the other day, and the topic of a groom’s cake came up. My friend didn’t know what it was, so I explained to her where they came from and what they are.

Groom’s cakes can be dated all the way back to the Victorian era. Originally, the groom’s cake was a very heavy and dense fruitcake. Tradition dictated that the cake was cut into pieces and given to the unmarried women at the wedding. The single women would then place the cake under their pillows, in the hopes that they would find their husband.

Today, groom’s cakes have evolved from the Victorian era version and become its own fun and memorable wedding tradition. The groom’s cake has turned into a gift from the bride to her groom, helping highlight his part within the wedding and to demonstrate more of his personality. Groom’s cakes can be found either at the wedding reception or at the rehearsal dinner as the main dessert.

Groom’s cakes have taken many different shapes, sizes and flavor. At Elysia Root Cakes’, we create all sorts of groom’s cakes that demonstrate the various interests of the groom. We have created football helmets of the groom’s favorite football team and even a tool shed for a groom that loved woodworking. One of our favorite groom’s cakes was the cake in the shape of a bottle of Jack Daniel’s – it was a huge hit! The possibilities for a tasty and delicious groom’s cake are endless. Whether your groom loves a certain sport, a certain drink or a certain trade, we can create a cake that will highlight and show off his interests.
