How do I order a cake?

There are many factors that go into the creation of a custom cake, so the most efficient way to begin discussing your event is to e-mail us. The first thing we need to know is the date of your event so that we can check if it is still available. Please provide the following information and we will contact you as soon as possible:

  • Date of Event
  • Delivery Time & Location
  • Event Theme/Occasion
    (bridal shower, wedding, birthday, baby shower etc.)
  • Number of Guests
  • Telephone Number
  • Email Address
  • Ideas, Colors, and/or Description

How far in advance should I order my cake?

We are often booked months ahead of time, so the sooner you reserve your place on our calendar, the better. Please contact us to discuss our availability. We can only accommodate a limited number of cakes each week, depending on the complexity of the orders. Therefore, we recommend you place your order as soon as you know a date for your event. A 50% non-refundable retainer will reserve your date, allowing you time to finalize the details of the cake later. We suggest a minimum of three months to a year for wedding cake orders. For short notice orders, please call us immediately on the rare chance that we may be available. Any cake requires a minimum two-day notice in order to be baked and decorated.

Do you offer delivery?

Yes, we deliver! We actually prefer to deliver all wedding cakes and most large event cakes, as they may require some set-up. Delivery prices are calculated by travel distance. Long deliveries or out-of-state deliveries may require special arrangements, so please contact us for more information.

Can I pick up my wedding cake?

We don’t recommend this because cakes—especially multi-tiered wedding cakes—are tricky business and can be surprisingly heavy. If you do choose to pick up your cake, know that we are not responsible once it leaves the premises.

Do you ship cakes?

We are sorry, but we do not ship our cakes at this time.

Do you rent your cake stands?

Yes, absolutely! Just ask.

What is fondant?

All of our cakes are covered in fondant, which is an edible sugar paste made from powdered sugar, gelatin, glucose, glycerin and water, and it is only used as an icing (not a filling). Fondant is not a replacement for buttercream; rather it is a final coating on top of the buttercream. Our cakes are first iced with buttercream and then we roll out our fondant very thin and lay it over our buttercreamed cakes. We prefer to cover cakes in fondant for several reasons—aesthetically, we love the smooth finish it gives to the exterior of our cakes.

Fondant also helps keep the cake fresh by providing a seal that helps to keep your cake very moist on the inside. It also adds strength to the exterior of the cake makes it easier to handle, transport, slice, and most importantly, decorate. Many of the decorations you see are sculpted or cut out of fondant and can be held in place very firmly even under stressful transportation or weather conditions. It is the most heat stable of any finish, making its use near mandatory for warm weather months. At the time the cakes are served the fondant can be cut with the cake and easily removed by anyone not wishing to eat it.

For those of you who think you don’t like fondant, we encourage you to please try ours. We use a delicious vanilla or chocolate fondant that we think may pleasantly surprise you once you try it. We always provide a complimentary fondant sample at your wedding cake consultation, and we actually find that many of our clients are happily surprised by how much they like fondant when they taste it.

Do you have a retail store? Can I come visit?

We are available for cake design consultations and tastings by appointment only. Elysia Root Cakes operates out of a commercially licensed kitchen located at 1939 W. Fulton St., Chicago IL 60612. We do not have a retail store or any pre-made cakes for sale. The process of making each custom cake, designed from scratch, start to finish, and completing every detail before it is time for delivery keeps us extremely busy. So please do not stop by unannounced.

How do I schedule a cake tasting?

We schedule cake design consultations based on our availability for your event date. If we are able to make a cake for you then we will schedule an appointment to discuss all of the details for your event. Elysia and our client service team are only available for personal meetings for wedding cakes or large event cakes that serve 100 people or more. For smaller cakes, we ask that you contact us with your order and we will help you come up with ideas for a fabulous cake.

Due to the busy schedules of our clients and the time constraints and deadlines we face, most appointments are made on Tuesdays through Thursdays between 12:00pm and 6:00pm. Fridays and Saturdays we are busy finishing and delivering the cakes. We try to accommodate everyone, so please contact us and we will make every effort to work within your schedule.

Please plan on about an hour for your consultation—we’ll discuss your overall wedding style, floral theme and your design ideas—feel free to bring in your invitations or inspiration pictures—we always welcome your ideas and will work with you to tailor a cake that is customized to your tastes. Then you will taste our cakes—we bake everything you request fresh for your tasting, so you’ll know exactly how your cake will taste on the day of your wedding.

We require a $25 tasting fee (for up to 2 people) for all cake tastings, which includes up to three cake flavor choices and up to five filling choices. Additional guests (up to 5 total) can be accommodated at an additional $10 per person).  Additional flavors may also be requested for $10 each and we are happy to accommodate custom flavor requests. If you choose to have Elysia Root Cakes make your cake, then the tasting will be free of charge and the $25 tasting fee will be credited toward the final price of your order. Because we bake everything fresh for your tasting, if you need to cancel, we ask that you do so at least 48 hours in advance of your scheduled appointment time. If you fail to keep your scheduled appointment and don’t call to let us know, your credit card will be charged $25. We ask that you be prompt to your consultation—being late will not always allow us enough time to give you the attention you need.

How much do the cakes cost?

Since all of our cakes are unique, and customized to you, we do not have set prices. Cakes are priced according to several different variables such as the number of servings, the complexity of diverse design elements, and any particulars important to the client. Each cake is a custom creation and our starting price per slice (the basis for pricing used by most bakeries) is $7.75 per slice. Our minimum order before tax and delivery for 2017 is $500 for all wedding cakes and $375 for all other orders. The base price of each cake includes the layered cake with flavored buttercream filling, buttercream icing, and very simple decoration. Additional sugar work such as gumpaste flowers and fondant figures are priced separately. Other factors that add to the price include cake sculpting, gumpaste decorations, detailed piping, painting, airbrushing, or other time consuming design elements, and delivery.

All cakes must be paid off in full with cash, check, debit, or credit card at least two weeks before delivery date, or the order may be cancelled.

Do you require an initial payment for cake orders?

Yes. We require a non-refundable retainer of about 50% of the estimated cake order in order to hold your date. Our orders are taken on a first come, first serve basis. We receive a lot of inquiries for dates that are unavailable, so if an order is cancelled at the last minute, we lose business that we could have had from other orders we turned down. For this reason your retainer will not be returned if an order is cancelled. We understand that some clients prefer to have a tasting and shop around before making a final decision, so we ask that any interested clients confirm their order by putting down a retainer within one week of the tasting or appointment, or the order may be cancelled. Wedding cakes must be paid in full two weeks before the date of delivery, unless otherwise arranged. For some last minute cancellations, the full price of the cake may still be charged and is non-refundable.

How do you handle food allergens?

We can accommodate requests for gluten-free cakes and some requests for dairy-free, egg-free or vegan cakes —please contact us to discuss.  At this time, we do not make any sugar-free cakes. Note that many items on our menu contain nuts and/or nut extracts, so please let us know if you have any nut or other allergies when you place your order.  When baking, we avoid cross contamination in that we prepare and bake cakes with nuts separately. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate anyone with severe allergies. We understand that allergies can be very serious and we use products (chocolate, flour, etc…) that may have been manufactured around nut products and all of our baked cakes are made using shared equipment that also processes nuts and gluten. We do not have a dedicated allergen-free kitchen. If you have severe allergies, we would recommend contacting a bakery with a dedicated nut or allergen free kitchen for your cake order.
