Real Wedding: Lora & Stephen

For Lora and Stephen’s Chicago wedding, our cake design centered on the color aesthetic of their stunning day. Their four-tiered cake was both Lemon cake with Raspberry buttercream filling as well as alternating Chocolate and Vanilla Bean cake layers with Vanilla Bean buttercream filling and was adorned in pink cascading florals from Christine Janda Design & Events. We love the addition of bright blooms on a classic white cake, and the emerald green ribbon to top off this one of a kind design. From the invitation suite to the floral bouquets to the cake, these summertime nuptials were colorful and cheery!

Custom Cake Spotlight: New Years Eve Wedding Cake with a Touch of Glam

Becky and Tony had a fabulous New Years Eve wedding this past holiday season at Drury Lane in Oak Brook. The couple’s elegant wedding cake was comprised of three square tiers, with a rhinestone glam wrap around the bottom of each tier. Their cake topper was silver with a touch of bling as well. Their cake was equal parts sophisticated and glamorous – a perfect fit for their lovely New Years Eve wedding.

Each piece of cake was a mix of vanilla and chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream. The Italian merengue buttercream on the outside was smooth, creating a sleek and clean look.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Elegant Wedding Cake with Fondant Ruffles

Last year, Erin and Dan tied the knot during a gorgeous wedding at the Harold Washington Library. Their delicious and beautiful wedding cake had a relatively simple design, topped with elegant details. We always love being part of weddings that take place in some of Chicago’s most gorgeous and iconic buildings, like the Harold Washington Library. Erin and Dan’s three tier ivory wedding cake was decorated with fondant ruffles, giving it a unique texture. It also had some lovely fresh floral as well as a cute gold cake topper.

Following tradition, the couple kept their top tier and froze it to enjoy on their first anniversary. (We offer all of our clients a fresh top tier if they would prefer to serve their entire cake on the day of their wedding.)

The bottom tier was vanilla bean cake with white chocolate as well as raspberry buttercream, the second tier was chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream, and their top tier was vanilla bean cake with chocolate and white chocolate buttercream. Yum!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Six Tier Wedding Cake at Harold Washington Library

If you’re looking for some lavish and elegant wedding inspiration, look no further! Mercy and Tony tied the knot last year while hosting the most gorgeous wedding at the Harold Washington Library. We had the privilege of making not one but two cakes for them (the first one being a traditional Nigerian engagement cake), but their six tier wedding cake was definitely the show stopper. Kesh Events did a spectacular job designing and coordinating Mercy and Tony’s amazing wedding. Take a peek at some of their photos below by Carasco Photography.

Standing at about four-and-a-half feet tall, Mercy and Tony’s stunning wedding cake towered over them! It was comprised of six tiers of round, white fondant covered cake with gorgeous fresh floral in between each tier (provided by Kesh Designs).

Their amazing wedding cake had three different flavor options: vanilla bean cake with vanilla bean buttercream, red velvet cake with cream cheese filling, and carrot cake with white chocolate buttercream. A couple of classic flavors plus an adventurous one – such great choices!

Their cake was the perfect extension of their decor. The flowers of the cake matched perfectly with the amazing centerpieces.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Four Tier Wedding Cake with Gorgeous Sugar Floral

Nadiya and Vlad tied the knot at The Murphy last summer, and their wedding cake was both elegant and lovely. The couple wanted their decor to exemplify sophisticated, timeless beauty, and they sure achieved it! Kara Superfine Events did an amazing job putting together their beautiful wedding. Nadiya and Vlad’s four tier fondant wedding cake was adorned with an array of sugar floral: white hydrangeas, white spray roses, white phalaenopsis orchids, and white cherry blossoms with hints of lavender. The small separator in the middle (separating the upper two tiers from the lower two tiers) was completely covered in this variety of sugar floral.


The final elegant detail on their wedding cake was a custom silver monogram, representing the initial of both of their first names.


The wedding cake had completely different flavor combinations for each tier: vanilla bean cake with raspberry mousse and white chocolate mousse fillings, chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream and dark chocolate ganache fillings, almond cake with coffee buttercream filling, and last but not least – vegan peanut butter cake with vegan chocolate buttercream filling. No matter what their guests’ taste preferences were, we’re sure they were able to find a flavor combination that they loved!



Kehoe Designs provided Nadiya and Vlad’s beautiful fresh floral, and Blue Plate Catering was their caterer. We hope Nadiya and Vlad enjoyed their gorgeous wedding cake as much as we loved making it!

Custom Cake Spotlight: A Wedding Cake that is Always Uniquely You

One of the best parts about wedding cakes is that they are highly customizable, so it’s always fun and interesting when a couple decides to inject their personalities to make it representative of them as a pair. The Elysia Root Cakes team is proud to create cakes that are always couture, always custom, and always unique to our clients. Michelle and Charles took advantage of this opportunity and made their wedding cake truly unique to them. They incorporated the Chicago skyline to represent Charles’ hometown, as well as crabs to represent Michelle’s Maryland roots. The middle tier, featuring a silhouette of minarets, represented the place in which their love story began: the University of Tampa. Michelle and Charles’ wedding cake served as a one-of-a-kind representation of them as a couple.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Four Tier Wedding Cake With Cascading Hydrangea

Elysia Root Cakes is proud to be the exclusive wedding cake provider for all weddings at The Langham Chicago. We love meeting with couples getting married at The Langham Chicago.  It is such a fun process to meet with our couples to create a cake that fits in with the beauty of the space, as well as one that satisfies their guests’ sweet tooth. We created a beautiful, four tier wedding cake with with cascading hydrangeas for Raj and Brooke’s wedding at The Langham last March. These lovely images by Sprung Photo capture their elegant and chic wedding cake glamorously and effortlessly.

Their all-white wedding cake was simple enough to not call attention away from the gorgeous space, yet also was stunning to the eye.  We love this photo below that not only shows off our beautiful cake, but also the drama of the chandeliers in the Devonshire Ballroom at The Langham Chicago.


Brooke and Raj wanted to have a little bit of variety in their wedding cake, so they chose two different cake flavors to serve their guests. Two tiers were rich double chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream and dark chocolate ganache, while the other two tiers were vanilla and chocolate cake alternating, with amaretto espresso buttercream and dark chocolate ganache.


We’d like to extend kudos to Sarah of Elevage Events for providing day-of-coordination for  such a lovely wedding. Other vendors that helped create Raj and Brooke’s perfect day were Pollen, Swing Assembly, Willow Creek, Salon Buzz, and Nika Vaughan Bridal Artists.

Expert Interviews: Carlene Smith, Naturally Yours Events

Carlene Smith is the owner of Naturally Yours Events, an eco-chic and green wedding and event planning company based in Chicago, Illinois. Naturally Yours Events specializes in planning your special day with as many environmentally friendly touches as you desire – from something simple as a locally grown bouquet to an entirely green event.

How did you get started as a wedding planner?

I have always been obsessed with details — whether planning birthday parties at 10 years old, organizing huge trips to midnight showings of super geeky movies, or helping family and friends plan their most important life moments— and I was quickly known as “the planner” among those around me. It wasn’t until after earning a degree in advertising, working for a prestigious wedding photographer, and moving to Chicago that I had that “ah ha” moment: I love to plan events and I rock at it! Pairing my personal and professional commitment to the environment with a passion for details, Naturally Yours Events came into fruition. Now my team and I work with some truly amazing vendors to create unique and stress-free events that are absolutely fun!

What do you enjoy most about being a wedding planner?

It is so fun to see all the details come together on the big day as planned. I really love to see when my clients get excited about an idea we came up with or vendors we have booked together. Also, when their faces light up when they see the venue for the first time or they see each other for the first time is such a magical moment to be a part of in someone’s life.

What is the most challenging aspect of being a wedding planner?

I would say that most of what I do as a wedding planner is general ‘small business owner’ stuff and that can get challenging. Most days I forget to eat or drink water and I just sit in the same position for hours emailing and such. But I wouldn’t change it for the world! I am doing what I love and I always keep growing and pushing myself.

What wisdom or advice would you give a bride/groom as a wedding planner?

All things start out with a good plan and clear vision. Before contacting vendors, have an idea of what you want the wedding day to feel like or what is the most important elements to you. Work on a realistic budget and be flexible with your wants in order to achieve those details that are highest on the list. For example, if photography is #1 on the list but the photographer you love is a little more than what you wanted to spend, try cutting out the hotel drop-off bags or forgo the favors. Your wedding doesn’t have to incorporate every item on The Knot’s “must have checklist”, just the ones that matter most to your day.

What’s your favorite cake flavor?

That is so hard, I really love cake. I would say my favorite is white cake with some sort of citrus filling or flavor. I love Mango, passion fruit, and lemon fillings or frostings with cake. Oh wait… I really enjoy a good red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting too.

How did you get started as a wedding planner?
I was born into the hospitality field and was exposed to wedding at a very early age. So it came naturally to me and in 2012- I got married and that experience was an eye opener for me. It really confirmed my love for weddings both on the planning and design side.

Give a general overview of your company – what’s the vision, style, feel of it?
I own 2 chicago based companies:  Kesh Events and Kesh Designs. Kesh Events provides luxury planning and styling services for couples in Chicago as well as destination weddings. We are able to tailor to our clients needs and can help from the beginning to the end of the planning process making sure that the wedding as a whole has a cohesive feel and look and also fits the couple’s style. Kesh Designs is a premier event decor company providing exquisite florals, couture linens and full event design services.

What do you enjoy most about wedding planning?
The experience is just amazing. I get to create MAGIC for my clients. Having a couple fully trust you with every single detail of one of the biggest days of their lives is such a huge compliment. Nothing beats that!

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
I would say the time we spend making sure everything is perfect! A lot of hours goes into what we do but that is the nature of the job and I accept the challenge 🙂

Do you have any advice for brides/grooms?
Oh YES!!! Know who you are as a couple! Hire the RIGHT vendors and trust them to do what they do best!Put money in the right places. Hire at least a Month -of – Coordinator ( best gift you can give yourself!)

What’s your favorite cake flavor?
This is an easy one! Elysia Root Cakes -Vanilla with Vanilla Frosting. YUM!!!

Are there any interesting wedding trends you’re seeing this year that stick out to you?
I am not a big fan of trends. I say make your own trend.  I would really love to see couples tailor their wedding to their taste and style and not copy what you see on Pinterest.

Describe a wedding you would put together if you were asked to do anything that you wanted.
That would be a real dream come true! I would plan and design a fabulous wedding  on a remote island 🙂 Seriously! That would be amazing.
