Upcoming Changes in 2018

Friends, colleagues and clients,

It is with a bittersweet purpose that I share this news with you today. During this holiday season of gratitude and reflection, I have been carefully examining my life, both from a business and personal perspective, and have made the difficult decision to close Elysia Root Cakes permanently January 27, 2018.

Please know it has been an absolute privilege and honor to be part of the Chicago wedding industry and to play a role in thousands of beautiful celebrations of love, life and family. I am so grateful for the wedding community, and the friendship and support that both clients and colleagues have shown me over the years.

In the years to come, I will look fondly back on many moments- including our move to the cake studio space at 1939 W. Fulton Street, our regular Treat Tuesday team lunches, having not one but two cakes featured on season 4 of Fox’s hit show, Empire, and being a part of the 100th wish granted by Wish Upon a Wedding. I still eagerly anticipate our upcoming episode of Cake Hunters, set to air in 2018, which was shot during PartySlate’s second anniversary celebration.

This has been a deeply personal decision made at a time when the business couldn’t be stronger, but the needs of my family have grown, and I can’t let those needs cause us to sacrifice the quality of our products and services for which we are known.

For our clients, we will continue to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible. We are pleased to recommend Sugar Fixe Patisserie to Chicago couples seeking referrals. We have complete confidence in our highly reputable colleague and are grateful that they are willing to help fulfill our client’s needs during this transition.

I am grateful to Nate Root, my husband of 12 years, for his unwavering support. Without him, Elysia Root Cakes would never have existed. I am also grateful to my amazing employees, past and present, for being so dedicated and professional and believing in our core values and mission.

This chapter of my life and business may be ending, but I take with me friendships and memories that can never be replaced. I am grateful to you all for following me on this great adventure.

There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction. -Winston Churchill

With much love and gratitude,

A Groom’s Cake with a Bark

Liz and Joey’s wedding day was a joyous celebration, filled with friends and family! The most memorable part of the day had to be the unveiling of the groom’s cake – Joey was pleasantly surprised to find his best friend turned cake form. Liz wanted his Jack Russell Terrier, Pebbles, to be a part of their special day, and this was the most creative way possible!  Liz arranged for Joey’s favorite Boston Crème pie from Joe’s Seafood to be delivered to us so that we could depict Pebbles getting into trouble by eating his pie!

This cake was so much fun to create, and even more exciting to see Joey’s expression when first laying eyes on him! Take a peek below at this one of a kind grooms cake, and Joey’s once in a lifetime surprise!

XO, Elysia

Custom Cake Spotlight: Bodybuilder Groom’s Cake and Blooming Wedding Cake

We absolutely love it when couples ask us to create not one, but two unique cakes for their wedding celebrations. Lauren and Lee, who got married last summer at the Museum of Contemporary Art, had a fun and personal groom’s cake as well as a gorgeous, four tier wedding cake. Kesh Events did a fantastic job planning their beautiful event. Thank you to Carasco Photography for sharing these lovely images of the couple and their two cakes below!

Lauren and Lee’s fun personalities really shone through the groom’s cake. The two of them love working on their fitness together, so Lauren thought she’d display that in the form of a surprise groom’s cake for Lee. The cake itself took the form of two stacked weight plates, and standing in front of it was Lauren’s fondant figurine holding up Lee’s. Too cute – girl power!

Lee’s groom’s cake was a yummy chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream.

Their wedding cake took on a completely different style – it was a beautiful, four tier cake with a large open fondant garden rose.

The flavors included almond and chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream and turtle filling.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Four Tier Wedding Cake with Gorgeous Sugar Floral

Nadiya and Vlad tied the knot at The Murphy last summer, and their wedding cake was both elegant and lovely. The couple wanted their decor to exemplify sophisticated, timeless beauty, and they sure achieved it! Kara Superfine Events did an amazing job putting together their beautiful wedding. Have a look at the gorgeous photos below by Studio This Is.

Nadiya and Vlad’s four tier fondant wedding cake was adorned with an array of sugar floral: white hydrangeas, white spray roses, white phalaenopsis orchids, and white cherry blossoms with hints of lavender. The small separator in the middle (separating the upper two tiers from the lower two tiers) was completely covered in this variety of sugar floral.

The final elegant detail on their wedding cake was a custom silver monogram, representing the initial of both of their first names.

The wedding cake had completely different flavor combinations for each tier: vanilla bean cake with raspberry mousse and white chocolate mousse fillings, chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream and dark chocolate ganache fillings, almond cake with coffee buttercream filling, and last but not least – vegan peanut butter cake with vegan chocolate buttercream filling. No matter what their guests’ taste preferences were, we’re sure they were able to find a flavor combination that they loved!

Kehoe Designs provided Nadiya and Vlad’s beautiful fresh floral, and Blue Plate Catering was their caterer. We hope Nadiya and Vlad enjoyed their gorgeous wedding cake as much as we loved making it!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Art Deco Wedding Cake

Sarah and Eric got married last September at A New Leaf, surrounded by their loving friends and family. Our team really enjoyed making their eye-catching, art-deco wedding cake. Naturally Yours Events did a wonderful job planning their big day, and Tuan B & Co captured it beautifully! Take a look at photos of their art deco wedding cake below.

Although the cake looks like it has three tiers, it technically has four. The middle, white section of the cake is actually two same-size tiers stacked to look like one extra tall tier. The gold part of the cake is gold painted fondant, creating an eye-catching metallic effect!

Sarah and Eric’s delicious art deco wedding cake had two different varieties of flavors: almond cake with dark chocolate ganache, as well as green tea cake with passionfruit buttercream and strawberry buttercream! Although green tea cake was not previously offered on our menu, our team put together a recipe specially for Sarah and Eric’s big day.  We love special requests and personalizing the cake not just on the outside, but the inside as well!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Gorgeous Three Tier Wedding Cake with Silver Leaf

This past spring, Emily and Patrick tied the knot in the heart of downtown Chicago at the gorgeous Holy Name Cathedral. Afterward, the couple held their jovial reception at Davanti Enoteca. Our team had the honor of creating their lovely three tier wedding cake, featuring an eye-catching silver metallic middle tier and a lovely camellia rose stencil design on the bottom tier. Kate from Chicago Vintage Weddings was their talented planner, while Tuan B & Co was their amazingly artistic photographer. Take a look at these gorgeous shots of Emily, Patrick, and their wedding cake below!

Emily and Patrick’s wedding cake design was fairly simple yet gorgeous. All three tiers were completely different from one another, but once combined they created one gorgeous cake! The top tier was clean white fondant, the second tier was fully covered in edible metallic silver leaf (yes, it’s real silver!), and the bottom was an extra tall tier which had a pearlized camellia rose stencil emulating the bride’s shoes.

The cake was also embellished with gorgeous fresh floral (consisting of pink and peach tones) provided by Fab Flora.

Emily and Patrick’s chocolate wedding cake contained two different kinds of delicious fillings: amaretto espresso buttercream and salted caramel buttercream.

Other vendors that took part in their special day were The Empty Pockets, Flawless Beauty, and AY Chicago Luxury Limousine.

If you’ve got a unique design in mind for your wedding cake, we’d love to hear about it! Send us an email or give us a call to set up your initial wedding cake consultation today!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Fishing Boat Groom’s Cake and Hanging Wedding Cake

We had a blast making both a groom’s cake and wedding cake for Kellie and Scott this past August! The couple- from Delray Beach, Florida- tied the knot here in the Windy City during a gorgeous ceremony at the Skyline Loft at Bridgeport Art Center. Tiffany Munster, Owner of Soiree Weddings & Events put together a stunning event and we were so happy to be part of it! Take a look at the photos we took of the groom’s cake, and the professional photos of their hanging wedding cake by Cristina G Photography.

The night before their wedding, Kellie and Scott held their rehearsal dinner at River Roast where they enjoyed a special groom’s cake for dessert. The cake was a sculpted fishing boat that included three passengers: Kellie, Scott, and their pup Kade! That was the couple’s way of including their furry friend into their wedding. The boat was called “The Granville Ames”, and featured a University of Miami logo on the side to honor their alma mater.

Kellie and Scott’s wedding took place the next day at the Skyline Loft at Bridgeport Art Center. They displayed their beautiful cake in a bit of an unusual manner- hung from the ceiling! MDM Entertainment hung the cake after the room flip, so guests were surprised by its lovely display. Instead of simply having one wedding cake for dessert, they wanted to have a full dessert table, so they had one large hanging wedding cake accompanied with four smaller single tier cakes. What a fantastic look that has been achieved, I’m sure any wedding cake maker would be proud of this.

The wedding cake was carrot cake with pecans and cream cheese filling. The other cakes were lemon cake with lemon buttercream, lemon cake with passion fruit buttercream, and then chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream. Vale of Enna provided fresh floral to adorn their beautiful side cakes. KSA-948 KSA-950 KSA-951 KSA-952 KSA-955

Other vendors that helped make Kellie and Scott’s wedding day great were Toast & Jam DJs, Paramount Events, Avant Garde Media Studio, and ShutterBooth. KSA-979

Cheers to the love birds, Kellie and Scott!
