A Groom’s Cake with a Bark

Liz and Joey’s wedding day was a joyous celebration, filled with friends and family! The most memorable part of the day had to be the unveiling of the groom’s cake – Joey was pleasantly surprised to find his best friend turned cake form. Liz wanted his Jack Russell Terrier, Pebbles, to be a part of their special day, and this was the most creative way possible!  Liz arranged for Joey’s favorite Boston Crème pie from Joe’s Seafood to be delivered to us so that we could depict Pebbles getting into trouble by eating his pie!

This cake was so much fun to create, and even more exciting to see Joey’s expression when first laying eyes on him! Take a peek below at this one of a kind grooms cake, and Joey’s once in a lifetime surprise!

Real Wedding: Rebecca & Adam

Looking back on Rebecca and Adam’s love-filled Chicago wedding day brings a smile to all our faces at Elysia Root Cakes HQ! Our bride Rebecca also happens to be a seasoned wedding planner with Honey Bee Weddings and we felt honored that she chose us to execute her wedding cake vision!

While we love coming up with creative designs to fit your unique vision, sometimes a simple white buttercream wedding cake is the perfect choice for a sophisticated, white-inspired reception.  The wedding took place at the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago and the contemporary yet classic square wedding cake was a perfect choice.

Each tier was a different delectable flavor: Red Velvet cake with Cream Cheese filling, Vanilla Bean cake with Dark Chocolate Ganache filling and Double Chocolate cake with White Chocolate Buttercream filling. The three-tiered cake was adorned with lush white florals from Kehoe Designs and delicate piped buttercream beading for a touch of texture.

All white wedding cakes are always timeless, and definitely some of our all-time favorites to create. We’d love to take a bite from this decadent design right about now! Wishing these two a lifetime of happiness together!

Christina & Kosta Engagement Party

Planning for your wedding cake is always fun, and always full of great designs and opportunities for customization; however, your engagement party is the perfect chance to explore your creative dreams! For Christina and Kosta’s love-filled engagement party at The Estate Chicago, the lush florals from Northern Greenhouses and sequined linens created a truly intimate and romantic aesthetic. For the cake design, it was only natural to create a sophisticated design with timeless flair. A white-fondant wrapped three-tier Chocolate and Vanilla Bean cake with different fillings on each tier was the perfect choice, decorated with metallic hues and topped with delicate fresh magenta orchids. This special occasion marked the beginning of Christina and Kosta’s new journey together, and we hope it was every bit as sweet as we imagine!

While we do have a few staple designs and décor accents, each cake is constructed based on a client’s individual vision. Custom Cake Spotlight: Gorgeous Buttercream Wedding Cake with Fresh Floral

Megan and Jay’s autumn wedding was full of rustic elegance. The couple tied the knot at Elawa Farm, a unique space just outside of Chicago with a countryside charm.  Their buttercream wedding cake was simple and elegant, with a super cute personal touch. Naturally Yours Events did a fantastic job of putting together their lovely wedding. Take a look at the stunning photos by Z+V Photography from the couple’s special day below.

Megan and Jay’s three tier wedding cake had neat, horizontal textured buttercream with a small piped bead border around each tier. Fab Flora added pops of dreamy fresh floral along with some fresh greenery.

One aspect to love about their wedding cake is that they included their favorite furry friend, Winston, as a fondant sculpture replica sitting next to the bottom tier (eating the cake!).

They had two different wedding cake flavors: pumpkin cake with salted caramel buttercream and cream cheese filling, and also vanilla bean cake with lemon buttercream. The two flavors were the perfect seasonal option accompanied by a more classic favorite!

Things to Consider Before Booking Your Wedding Cake – Part I

Unless you’re a wedding planner, you probably don’t really know what to expect in terms of finding and booking your perfect wedding cake. It’s a fun process and can be very straightforward as long as you’ve been given a little introduction beforehand. We’ve put together some tips and general information that could be very helpful to know prior to diving into your wedding cake search.

1. Schedule your cake tasting at least 3 to 6 months in advance of your wedding date. Most custom cake studios have limited staff and dates do fill up (especially during popular wedding months and dates). Check the cake studio’s availability before making an appointment to avoid disappointment.

2. Do YOUR homework before meeting with a cake vendor. For example, find out if a wedding cake is included as part of your venue package. If it isn’t, see if there is a preferred vendor list. Are there extra charges for bringing in an outside vendor?

3. Bring as much information as possible for design inspiration (invitation, color swatches, photos of the dress, flowers, Pinterest boards). Be prepared to explain why you like certain elements. Talk to your partner prior to the consultation about what he/she wants as far as cake design.

4. Know how you’d like the cake to be distributed at your reception- plated or at a dessert station. If you would like the cake to be plated, then you must account for every single guest in your servings size. If you plan to have a dessert station, you can usually serve less cake (we suggest 20-25% less cake, and to serve other desserts to make up the difference).

5. Know cake terms – tiers versus layers. Standard wedding cake slices are 1 inch deep, 2 inches wide and 4 inches tall.

Tips on Choosing Your Wedding Cake Flavors

Planning an entire wedding can feel overwhelming at times, especially because there are so many decisions to be made. Fortunately, there are some decisions that are actually fun to make- like choosing your wedding cake flavors! To help the process, we put together some tips on how you should choose the sweet flavors that will be part of your big day.

When discussing your wedding cake, we always recommend choosing flavors you personally love. We think that every detail of your reception should be a reflection of who you are as a couple. A wedding is more memorable when everything is “favorites” of the couple and that absolutely applies to the flavor of your cake!  Like the outside of the cake, the inside can be just as customized and we love working with our clients to create a scrumptious cake that tastes as good as it looks.

Wedding Cake Flavors

Here are four tips on selecting your cake flavors:

1) Analyze your palate – Do you enjoy fruity confections – or do you prefer something more nutty? How about dark, rich flavors such as a dark chocolate ganache? Or perhaps you enjoy sweet and salty combinations, such as a delicious salted caramel.

2) Seasonality – Think about what ingredients are available during the seasons: strawberries and raspberries in the summer, warm spice and pumpkin in the fall. Chocolate is available all year round (thank goodness!).

3) Recreate your favorite dessert – some of our clients come in with a favorite dessert in mind – we deconstruct the dessert and build the flavors up as a cake.  Some of the fun flavors we have created for clients are as follows: “Almond Joy Cake” –  Almond Cake, alternating layers of Dark Chocolate Ganache and Coconut Buttercream. “Peanut Butter & Jelly Cake” – Vanilla Cake, Peanut Butter Buttercream with Raspberry Preserves.

4) Don’t be afraid to go outside the box and treat the cake like a “composed” dessert.  Mix up the four layers of cake and three layers of buttercream flavors to give your guests an unexpected surprise.  Desserts are most memorable when they are unique and delicious. We let you choose three flavors of cake and five flavors of filling from our menu for your cake tasting so you can mix and match and come up with something that reflects your tastes to share with your guests.
