Real Wedding: Deema & Ermin

We love looking back on Deema and Ermin’s gorgeous Chicago wedding day, and reminiscing on their creative and timeless Super Mario wedding cake. This customized triple-tiered wedding cake was straight out of a Mario-inspired dream and we love every last detail. Tailoring each and every wedding cake to fit our many couple’s unique styles is always fun, and this cake truly was one for the record books!

Taking a deeper dive in to this custom creation, the first tier of this cake houses a detailed Mario adventure backdrop, adorned with full sized Mario and Luigi characters. Incorporating a pop of color is always a great addition to any cake design—we loved incorporating the Piranha Plant for a little extra pizazz on the second tier. From the fondant Yoshi to the flaming window on the third tier castle to Bowser and Peach as decorative cake toppers, this cake is full of festive detailing and flair. It wouldn’t be a party without the whole Mario crew, which is why we also had to include the one and only Goomba.

This cake was a wedding day hit, especially with the children. We’re always fans of letting your personality as a couple shine through your wedding day; themed wedding cakes are a great way to do so, and are some of our favorites to create. Arete’s Red Velvet Cake Private Baking Lesson

After Elysia received a touching email from Ms. Halle Quezada, a Chicago Public School teacher at Suder Montessori Magnet, the two made arrangements for one of her students to come in for a private baking lesson last week.

Arete, a bright young student, had lost her mother unexpectedly the previous year. She wrote an essay about her mom’s sudden passing, and one passage in particular stuck out to Ms. Quezada: Arete wrote about how her mom used to always bake red velvet cake, and that she never got a chance to learn from her. After her mother passed away, the family found the last red velvet cake she ever made (perfectly preserved in the car, thanks to Chicago winter temperatures) and they all cherished it.

Ms. Quezada, very understandably touched by this story, reached out to Elysia and asked if she could arrange for a private baking lesson so that Arete could learn how to make red velvet cake. Elysia and the team happily agreed! We hosted Arete, her sister, her aunt, and Ms. Quezada for a fun afternoon of baking. Take a look at these photos of their lesson below led by Joyce Marie:

The team loved teaching Arete and her family how to bake red velvet cake, as a way to remember and honor her mother. We hope that she’ll be able to share this recipe with her own children in the future so that her mother’s legacy lives on!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Five Tier Wedding Cake with Vertical Texture

Sarah and Jared had a lovely fall wedding last year at The Langham Chicago. Their five tier wedding cake was relatively simple, but also had some beautiful details that made it stand out. Thanks to Linda Alpert of Affairs with Linda for planning such a beautiful wedding, as well as to Phil Goldman Photographic Design for sharing photos from their special day. The couple decided to hire both photographers and a videographer to capture their wedding which is a lovely way to ensure you have captured enough of your day. Sarah and Jared’s five tier square wedding cake was covered in buttercream that had a vertical scallop texture. It created an interesting look that still maintained a relatively simple design. Kehoe Designs provided the fresh orchids that accented the cake.

The bottom four tiers were chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream and dark chocolate ganache, vanilla bean cake with vanilla bean buttercream, and chocolate cake with cookies-n-cream buttercream. The couple actually saved the top tier (which was red velvet cake with cream cheese filling) to freeze and eat on their first year anniversary! (Note: our non-Langham hotel clients can choose whether they’d like to freeze and save their original top tier, or to receive a complimentary fresh tier from us on their one year anniversary!)

Custom Cake Spotlight: New Years Eve Wedding Cake with a Touch of Glam

Becky and Tony had a fabulous New Years Eve wedding this past holiday season at Drury Lane in Oak Brook. The couple’s elegant wedding cake was comprised of three square tiers, with a rhinestone glam wrap around the bottom of each tier. Their cake topper was silver with a touch of bling as well. Their cake was equal parts sophisticated and glamorous – a perfect fit for their lovely New Years Eve wedding.

Each piece of cake was a mix of vanilla and chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream. The Italian merengue buttercream on the outside was smooth, creating a sleek and clean look.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Bodybuilder Groom’s Cake and Blooming Wedding Cake

We absolutely love it when couples ask us to create not one, but two unique cakes for their wedding celebrations. Lauren and Lee, who got married last summer at the Museum of Contemporary Art, had a fun and personal groom’s cake as well as a gorgeous, four tier wedding cake. Lauren and Lee’s fun personalities really shone through the groom’s cake. The two of them love working on their fitness together, so Lauren thought she’d display that in the form of a surprise groom’s cake for Lee. The cake itself took the form of two stacked weight plates, and standing in front of it was Lauren’s fondant figurine holding up Lee’s. Too cute – girl power!

Their wedding cake took on a completely different style – it was a beautiful, four tier cake with a large open fondant garden rose.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Elegant Wedding Cake with Gold Accents

Victoria and Dan’s lovely wedding could be best described as a timeless and classic affair. The couple tied the knot at the Skokie Country Club, with the help of Lori Stephenson (Owner of LOLA Event Productions) as their wedding planner. We designed Victoria and Dan’s elegant wedding cake in a way that fit perfectly into the decor: it had a relatively simple design and was adorned with lovely gold accents. Their beautiful, elegant wedding cake consisted of four tiers, which alternated between horizontal textured buttercream and piped buttercream with single swiss dots. The second tier, sprayed in gold, was the most eye-catching component; it also complemented the gold “love” cake topper. Finally, each tier was lined with a small and dainty piped bead border.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Six Tier Wedding Cake at Harold Washington Library

If you’re looking for some lavish and elegant wedding inspiration, look no further! Mercy and Tony tied the knot last year while hosting the most gorgeous wedding at the Harold Washington Library. We had the privilege of making not one but two cakes for them (the first one being a traditional Nigerian engagement cake), but their six tier wedding cake was definitely the show stopper. Standing at about four-and-a-half feet tall, Mercy and Tony’s stunning wedding cake towered over them! It was comprised of six tiers of round, white fondant covered cake with gorgeous fresh floral in between each tier (provided by Kesh Designs).

Their amazing wedding cake had three different flavor options: vanilla bean cake with vanilla bean buttercream, red velvet cake with cream cheese filling, and carrot cake with white chocolate buttercream. A couple of classic flavors plus an adventurous one – such great choices!

Their cake was the perfect extension of their decor. The flowers of the cake matched perfectly with the amazing centerpieces.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Whimsical, Baby Blue Wedding Cake

Tess and Kevin’s whimsical wedding at Cafe Brauer was just gorgeous. They chose a forest-inspired theme, and their colors were baby blue, red, and gold. The bride’s “something blue” was none other than her wedding cake, topped with the most adorable cake topper one ever did see. Thanks to Geneoh Photography for such fantastic photos, and to Erin Braun for planning and orchestrating their beautiful wedding day. The couple’s five tier, dusty blue fondant wedding cake was covered with small white flowers cascading from the top to the bottom.  Sitting on top of the cake were two deer figures sitting on a bed of moss, surrounded by whimsical twigs. This adorable topper was made by the crafty bride herself! It was simply adorable.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Art Deco Style Wedding Cake

Last summer, Brooke and Brian celebrated their marriage at The Ivy Room in Chicago. The couple’s beautiful wedding cake had adorable art deco-style details as well as lovely fresh floral. Brooke and Brian’s three tier, blush colored wedding cake had beautiful details to love. Along the bottom of the first and third tiers, they had an art deco scallop stencil design in metallic gold. Centered on the middle tier, there were lovely hand-cut, shimmering gold and white art deco fan shapes. Their cake had two different flavor varieties: the first choice was almond cake with dark chocolate ganache and raspberry buttercream filling, and the second choice was chocolate and almond alternating cake with Nutella and raspberry buttercream filling. Yum!!
