Custom Cake Spotlight: White Fondant Wedding Cake with Monogram

Last August, Carrie and Ed said their “I Do”s at one of our favorite venues, The Langham Chicago. Their wedding was both classic and sophisticated, and they had a beautiful (and delicious) cake to match. Take a look at their lovely photos by Artisan Events below.


Carrie and Ed’s three tier wedding cake was composed of clean, white fondant with a pearlized fondant ribbon at the base of each tier. The middle tier had a subtle circle imprint with their first initials, C/E, in the center. The overall design of their wedding cake was neat and relatively simple, while maintaining an elegant look. 


HMR Designs provided fresh orchid blooms to adorn their cake.


The couple took their top tier home, to freeze and enjoy on their one year anniversary. (Note: we offer our non-Langham hotel affiliated clients a fresh complimentary tier if they would prefer to serve their whole cake at their wedding!)


Carrie and Ed’s delicious wedding cake was composed of vanilla bean cake accompanied with raspberry buttercream and lemon curd filling. Is your mouth watering yet?!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Five Tier Wedding Cake with Vertical Texture

Sarah and Jared had a lovely fall wedding last year at The Langham Chicago. Their five tier wedding cake was relatively simple, but also had some beautiful details that made it stand out. Thanks to Linda Alpert of Affairs with Linda for planning such a beautiful wedding, as well as to Phil Goldman Photographic Design for sharing photos from their special day. The couple decided to hire both photographers and a videographer to capture their wedding which is a lovely way to ensure you have captured enough of your day. Sarah and Jared’s five tier square wedding cake was covered in buttercream that had a vertical scallop texture. It created an interesting look that still maintained a relatively simple design. Kehoe Designs provided the fresh orchids that accented the cake.

The bottom four tiers were chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream and dark chocolate ganache, vanilla bean cake with vanilla bean buttercream, and chocolate cake with cookies-n-cream buttercream. The couple actually saved the top tier (which was red velvet cake with cream cheese filling) to freeze and eat on their first year anniversary! (Note: our non-Langham hotel clients can choose whether they’d like to freeze and save their original top tier, or to receive a complimentary fresh tier from us on their one year anniversary!)

Custom Cake Spotlight: New Years Eve Wedding Cake with a Touch of Glam

Becky and Tony had a fabulous New Years Eve wedding this past holiday season at Drury Lane in Oak Brook. The couple’s elegant wedding cake was comprised of three square tiers, with a rhinestone glam wrap around the bottom of each tier. Their cake topper was silver with a touch of bling as well. Their cake was equal parts sophisticated and glamorous – a perfect fit for their lovely New Years Eve wedding.

Each piece of cake was a mix of vanilla and chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream. The Italian merengue buttercream on the outside was smooth, creating a sleek and clean look.

Custom Cake Spotlight: Elegant Wedding Cake with Gold Accents

Victoria and Dan’s lovely wedding could be best described as a timeless and classic affair. The couple tied the knot at the Skokie Country Club, with the help of Lori Stephenson (Owner of LOLA Event Productions) as their wedding planner. We designed Victoria and Dan’s elegant wedding cake in a way that fit perfectly into the decor: it had a relatively simple design and was adorned with lovely gold accents. Their beautiful, elegant wedding cake consisted of four tiers, which alternated between horizontal textured buttercream and piped buttercream with single swiss dots. The second tier, sprayed in gold, was the most eye-catching component; it also complemented the gold “love” cake topper. Finally, each tier was lined with a small and dainty piped bead border.

Each delicious piece of cake held a variety of different flavors that complimented each other: pumpkin and chocolate cake with cream cheese, salted caramel buttercream, and vanilla bean buttercream filling – how great does that sound?

Last summer, Brooke and Brian celebrated their marriage at The Ivy Room in Chicago. The couple’s beautiful wedding cake had adorable art deco-style details as well as lovely fresh floral. Brooke and Brian’s three tier, blush colored wedding cake had beautiful details to love. Along the bottom of the first and third tiers, they had an art deco scallop stencil design in metallic gold. Centered on the middle tier, there were lovely hand-cut, shimmering gold and white art deco fan shapes. Their cake had two different flavor varieties: the first choice was almond cake with dark chocolate ganache and raspberry buttercream filling, and the second choice was chocolate and almond alternating cake with Nutella and raspberry buttercream filling. Yum!!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Six Tier Wedding Cake at the Shedd Aquarium

Elizabeth and Joe tied the knot last year at St. Chrysostom’s Church, and then celebrated in a way that was especially personal to the bride. Elizabeth is an animal trainer at the Shedd Aquarium who works with the Beluga whales there, so it was only fitting that the couple held their reception at the Shedd! Their wedding cake was adorably fitting – it was a six tier round buttercream cake with alternating aegean opal fondant ribbon and fondant whales around the base of each tier. I’m not sure what their honeymoon plans were but I know for a fact it would have involved something like going whale watching california has plenty of boats that take people out to see them, so maybe that was their destination.One really cute moment of their wedding was when Elizabeth’s coworkers surprised guests by putting on an animal show amidst the celebration. So sweet!

Elizabeth and Joe had two different flavor options in their wedding cake: vanilla bean cake with cream cheese filling and vanilla bean buttercream, and chocolate cake with cream cheese filling and chocolate buttercream. These are great standard flavors with a yummy twist of cream cheese.

Elysia Root Cakes’ 2016 Team Resolutions

The Elysia Root Cakes team had a fantastic year in 2015, and we’re striving for an even better 2016. We thought it might be fun to come up with a list of goals to achieve as a team this year- and no, our resolutions don’t involve going to the gym (though we’re not saying that would be a bad idea, to offset our sugar intake!) Have a look at our list of new year’s resolutions for 2016:

1. Send our cakes to more and/or different venues. This year, we already have plans to send our cakes to the Field Museum and the Chicago Cultural Center – two places (we as a team) have never been to before. We love sending our cakes to new venues, and we hope to hit all Chicago landmark buildings very soon!

2. Expand our menu with new and improved cake and filling flavors. Our team is hard at work researching and testing new cake flavors and fillings. Some new fillings you can expect to see on our 2016 menu will be chocolate fudge frosting, lavender honey buttercream, and Mexican hot chocolate buttercream. We’re also working on new cake flavors like peanut butter, green tea, and pistachio cake. Yum!!

3. Host more baking and decorating classes in our cake studio. We’ve got our first class of 2016 coming up- it’s a fondant basics class for adults on January 30th. Participants will learn how to handle and apply fondant, as well as learn various decorating techniques. (If you’re interested, make sure to call us today!). Not only will we be hosting more adult baking classes, but classes for kids as well!


4. Expand our team. A bigger and better year means having more hands on deck!


5. Improve technique to yield the very best results. We’re sending our team members to a few different classes in the next couple months, so that they can work on their (already amazing) technique. They’ll learn some new and improved techniques on creating sugar floral, among other things. This means there will be more to choose from on the design front!

Custom Cake Spotlight: Art Deco Wedding Cake

Sarah and Eric got married last September at A New Leaf, surrounded by their loving friends and family. Our team really enjoyed making their eye-catching, art-deco wedding cake. Naturally Yours Events did a wonderful job planning their big day, and Tuan B & Co captured it beautifully! Take a look at photos of their art deco wedding cake below.

Although the cake looks like it has three tiers, it technically has four. The middle, white section of the cake is actually two same-size tiers stacked to look like one extra tall tier. The gold part of the cake is gold painted fondant, creating an eye-catching metallic effect!

Sarah and Eric’s delicious art deco wedding cake had two different varieties of flavors: almond cake with dark chocolate ganache, as well as green tea cake with passionfruit buttercream and strawberry buttercream! Although green tea cake was not previously offered on our menu, our team put together a recipe specially for Sarah and Eric’s big day.  We love special requests and personalizing the cake not just on the outside, but the inside as well!

Expert Interviews: Carlene Smith, Naturally Yours Events

Carlene Smith is the owner of Naturally Yours Events, an eco-chic and green wedding and event planning company based in Chicago, Illinois. Naturally Yours Events specializes in planning your special day with as many environmentally friendly touches as you desire – from something simple as a locally grown bouquet to an entirely green event.

How did you get started as a wedding planner?

I have always been obsessed with details — whether planning birthday parties at 10 years old, organizing huge trips to midnight showings of super geeky movies, or helping family and friends plan their most important life moments— and I was quickly known as “the planner” among those around me. It wasn’t until after earning a degree in advertising, working for a prestigious wedding photographer, and moving to Chicago that I had that “ah ha” moment: I love to plan events and I rock at it! Pairing my personal and professional commitment to the environment with a passion for details, Naturally Yours Events came into fruition. Now my team and I work with some truly amazing vendors to create unique and stress-free events that are absolutely fun!

What do you enjoy most about being a wedding planner?

It is so fun to see all the details come together on the big day as planned. I really love to see when my clients get excited about an idea we came up with or vendors we have booked together. Also, when their faces light up when they see the venue for the first time or they see each other for the first time is such a magical moment to be a part of in someone’s life.

What is the most challenging aspect of being a wedding planner?

I would say that most of what I do as a wedding planner is general ‘small business owner’ stuff and that can get challenging. Most days I forget to eat or drink water and I just sit in the same position for hours emailing and such. But I wouldn’t change it for the world! I am doing what I love and I always keep growing and pushing myself.

What wisdom or advice would you give a bride/groom as a wedding planner?

All things start out with a good plan and clear vision. Before contacting vendors, have an idea of what you want the wedding day to feel like or what is the most important elements to you. Work on a realistic budget and be flexible with your wants in order to achieve those details that are highest on the list. For example, if photography is #1 on the list but the photographer you love is a little more than what you wanted to spend, try cutting out the hotel drop-off bags or forgo the favors. Your wedding doesn’t have to incorporate every item on The Knot’s “must have checklist”, just the ones that matter most to your day.

What’s your favorite cake flavor?

That is so hard, I really love cake. I would say my favorite is white cake with some sort of citrus filling or flavor. I love Mango, passion fruit, and lemon fillings or frostings with cake. Oh wait… I really enjoy a good red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting too.
